    Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

Important Information
WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Good saw but starts hard when cold and is a bit heavy I'm a strong but small woman and this is about as big a saw as I can handle. I have a 180c 14" that I use for most cutting, but storm damage required a bigger saw to get through the large trees. After a frustrating time getting it started the 18" ate through the 24" trees like butter, even with the green chain. I chalked the hard start up to being new, but the next day same thing. Not sure I'll be able to start it at all if the weather is cold. It seems the a good, powerful saw that will be useful for me as long as I stay strong but not something I could use all day like the 180c. August 5, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by awesome machine Took a tree down in no time. Fantastic, can't say enough good things about it August 4, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Hungry!! I purchased my MS-291 three years ago and have never looked back. This saw is hungry for wood, I had a red oak fall. The trunk was measured at 28 inches and the saw ate it up bad. I have an 18 inch bar and stock chain. After cutting the tree I did buy a new bar and chain. Though I did have the chain sharpened and the dealer said flip the bar. Ok, no problem. The chainsaw starts every time, though seems much easier to pull after cutting the 60 ft tree, I may have worn the saw a little. I also own the HT-101 and a trimmer both from Stihl.Great products, not sure what other people are doing with their saws, I own hobby store and I hear the same complaints, people are just cheap, don't know what their doing or just like to complain.Keep up the good work Stihl!Scott SpinosoNew Jersey July 27, 2016
Rated 1 out of 5 by impossible to start, dies on idle just bought new 291 straight from a dealer. After 30min of work it starts to die on idle. Few days later, I can't start it with chain brake on. It's back at dealers with some clutch issue and I got nothing in four days. This is a definition of a bad product/ bad first experience. I kind of wish getting something cheap, like 3-4x the price that I can return/swap at a chain store for a working equipment. People pay premium for equipment to work right out of the box and work well. All I got for my premium is hassle and lots of lost time. This suppose to be the best ... it ain't. July 24, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by This machine has everything you can ask for, power, balance, fuel efficient... WHAT A BEAST...had a tree go down in a recent storm,"65' silver maple"removal estimate out of this world!!! Went and bought this beast and did it myself..4.5 hrs. and 3 tanks of fuel later the maple was history. I have used many different "affordable brands" in my day, what a waste of money. You may think the MS 291 is pricey, BUT the performance, ease of use, balance, light weight and fuel efficiency of this machine is worth every dollar. The Ferrari of chain saws in my opinion. Rated 2 out of 5 by POOR OILER Ive had this saw for about a year now. It does seem a bit underpowered which I was very surprised by. My main problems are: takes at least 4-10 pulls to start, it has a very conservative oiler WHICH IS NOT ADJUSTABLE!????????( on a stihl?????), so you burn threw chains like crazy ( only stihl yellow chains btw I buy), and that I literally pick using my 26 year old O26 because it starts first pull, and makes a chain last. I could deal with the saw if it had an adjustable oiler at least. I'm very experienced and have owned many saws. I own my O26 now and this one. Both full Stihl woodsman cases, tool kits, etc. I can't get rid of my O26 cuz of sentimental value so I'm mad I didn't buy a proffesional saw. I only do firewood 2 times a year about 5 cord so I figured this would do it. July 15, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by ROCK STAR Chainsaw! Purchased this about a year ago. (June 2015)We own a house in the high mountains of Colorado - 10K. I needed to fell quite a few very tall (over 60 ft) pine trees. This saw cut through them like a hot knife through butter! Job done.I then needed to drop a couple of large aspen trees at our place in Denver. I used a 22 ft. tall ladder to get started. After dropping several branches, I went after the main trunk (still atop the ladder) -- I made a misjudgement. The trunk began to fall and took the saw with it. My choices were to hang on or let it go.I let go - dropping the saw over 22 feet down onto a concrete path!!The engine didn't stop, blade immediately stopped. The large black handle bent slightly. The plastic spring connection broke. I continued to use the saw to finish the job. Job done, owner safe.I still can't believe it didn't smash into a bunch of pieces!! Didn't even act like anything happened. Incredible! June 9, 2016
Rated 2 out of 5 by I miss my MS290. MS291 is not a step up. There are two key design flaws that I see with the MS291. The new twist on air filter design allows dust to get around it. Whenever I remove the filter there is saw dust all over the air intake plenum. I am sure this will shorten the life the engine. I apply grease to the seal area to create a better seal. This reduced the dust getting by but did not eliminate it. Also, the chain will become bound up on the bar when cutting in snow or wet/frozen wood. I never had this problem with my MS290. I think it is because the chain on the MS291 does not coast when idling like the MS290. If I hear the engine starting to bog down, I can pull the bar out of the cut and rev the engine to clear out the chain/bar. If I don't catch it in time, I will spend the next hour scrapping slushy sawdust out of the bar groove with a screw driver. I found the problem was much worse if I used the cold weather bar oil. My neighbor has a MS271 and has experienced the same issue. We are both long time experienced wood cutters.I had a MS290 for 7 years before it got smashed by a falling tree. I liked my MS290 and thought the MS291 would be a like for like replacement; I was wrong. I have been a practicing engineer for 11 years and consider these issues to be key design flaws.I would like to comment on some of the reviews where people have trouble starting their saw. My saw starts very easy from my point of view. If you do not have enough upper body strength to start this saw then you should not be buying a MS291, buy a smaller homeowner saw. June 9, 2016
