    Anti-Vibration System

    Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

  • Zoom
    Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Zoom
Toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers
Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.

Important Information
WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chain saws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus additional chain braking feature (Q), STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chain saws.
* The actual listed guide bar length can vary from the effective cutting length depending upon which power head it is installed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Best chainsaw I have ever owned! We heat our home entirely with firewood that we cut ourselves, so a reliable and powerful saw is a must. This is the first Stihl I have ever owned and now wouldn't buy any other brand. Best chainsaw I have ever owned!! February 24, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by fuel efficiency at its finest with PLENTY of power being born and raised in the state of Oregon i have owned/operated many chainsaws in my lifetime. the 291 literally 'melted' through a Rock Maple yesterday afternoon when Wisconsin's weather had moderated enough to fell that tree. this machine is VERY fuel efficient, is easy to start, and a workhorse that is 'Second-To-None.' i am Very Happy that i searched until i found the 291 as its popularity here keeps them sold out often. FIVE STARS from someone that used a Felling ( a two-cylinder beast ) Saw and worked the slopes of Mount Saint Helens years ago. February 22, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by After owning a 24 year old Farm Boss the clutch goes out. Wow!!! Great Chain saw!!! I bought my house 24 years ago. The first thing my wife does is goes out and buys me all StihL products! Seeing th reviews about these saws I have to say you haven't seen nothing! This saw has been worked to death 28 trees in my back yard and every year cutting fire wood for my house. Its' been and all my Stihl products have been great to me.Oh I have to add I am no stranger to cutting trees down! Doing almost all my life.BW February 18, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great features/value Wow one saw that last and works when I need it. Plenty of power, I just let the saw do the work. Starts every time and doesn't wear me out. Runs quieter and is light weight. February 15, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by No decompression valve I have a larger 391 which is easy to start because of the decompression valve. When trying to crank the 291, it's hard to get a smooth complete pull because there is no valve. My other complaint is the short piece of vinyl string that holds the oil cap on. I pulled it out. The 291 is a good saw except for that. February 14, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by New 291 10 trees in... My old larger Stihl saw was a problematic 280. It was made only one year. It had lots of great features and cut well when it ran but was problematic. So after about 9 years it was time to replace it. I chose the Farm Boss 291 at the recommendation of my trusted local hardware dealer. In three tanks I have dropped 10 trees, cut and moved a huge dead Oak to finish a road to my back property and have dropped bucked and rounded all the oak trees to fill next years firewood. 3 cords/4 trees (I like to stack oak two years but these trees died 2013 from the 2012 drought stress/hypoxilon so they should be ready this fall.)This 291 saw cuts powerfully and it's not even broken in yet. It starts easier than my smaller 280 motor, cuts faster and is a winner. A+. I even verified the inertia chain lock works in addition to the guard lock bar. I do not recommend you do this yourself! This is a powerful machine, so use it safely and correctly and your firewood chores just got easier. Can't speak to it longevity but I suspect it will be good for years to come. My little 017 is 14 years old and going strong! February 13, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Rural homeowner workhorse, no fuss, easy to start, cuts very well. My 1988 028 wasn't going to make a 27th season. I'd had great service from my old saw, and this 291 seems like equal saw. I Cut 4-5 cords of standing dead locust per year, which is very hard wood, throws a lot of sparks, dulls chains quickly, but is phenomenal firewood. The 028 had the same size chain, but with a 16' bar, 291 has an 18" bar, and I don't know if it dissipates heat better, but I don't need to sharpen it 1/3 as often as old saw. That is such a time saver. I always use Stihl 2 cycle and bar/chain oil, as well as their saw chains. Do not use inferior lubes, you really want well engineered for the purpose oil. My saw takes about 1 minute of blipping the throttle to keep it running when it's really cold, then it idles very well, even when idled for a prolonged time. I'm pretty hard on saws, pinching bars, cutting brush, cutting water logged frozen wood, bumping chain into dirt/rocks. I'm also bad for trying to cut just a little more when chain is dulled, I'm your typical idiot with power tools. That is why I need Stihl . February 12, 2015
